Pay-per-unlock vs. subscriptions: which model earns more?
Subscriptions reward volume, pay-per-unlock rewards quality. Here is how the two models compare for creators with small and mid-sized audiences.
A subscription is a promise to keep publishing. A paid unlock is a promise about one piece of content. That difference decides which model fits your workload.
Where subscriptions win
If you publish several times a week and already have a loyal audience in the thousands, recurring revenue smooths out your income. The trade-off is churn: every month you have to earn the renewal again.
Where pay-per-unlock wins
- You publish irregularly and do not want a content calendar hanging over you.
- Your audience is small but high-intent — a few hundred people who actually buy.
- You want each item priced on its own merit instead of averaged into a flat fee.
- You want buyers who never wanted a subscription in the first place.
Doing both
Many creators keep a subscription elsewhere and use unlock links for premium one-offs, custom requests and back-catalogue sets. The link works next to whatever else you run.
